The Star Wars universe has become vast, colorful and brilliantly realized over the last 40 years, but it can all be traced back to one artist. Now, thanks to a new book, his story is being told in a brand new way.

Ralph McQuarrie's art brought the world of Star Wars to life for the first time when he was approached by George Lucas in the 1970s. From Lucas' scripts, McQuarrie imagined the characters, planets, ships and weapons that we have come to know and love. Those first drawings have since inspired, not just the additional films in the Star Wars universe, but also comics, video games and wildly popular animated series.

David Mandel, Emmy-winning executive producer a showrunner of HBO's Veep, has now captured those early drawings in a brand new book, and we caught up with him and his cowriters Branden Alinger and Wade Lageose to find out what they uncovered while putting together Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie.
