In a move they’re calling a “brand-new, multi-platform animation franchise,” Marvel just announced a feature-length film and six four-minute digital shorts dubbed Marvel Rising. The move is intended to introduce the next generation of comic-entertainment-consuming humans to the next generation of diverse and inclusive Marvel heroes.
The shorts will come first, some time in 2018, and spotlight “Spider-Gwen with her new secret moniker, Ghost-Spider.” After those, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, a feature-length animated film will debut later in the year, with distribution partners to be named later. Beyond that, future stories and content are also being developed for Marvel’s digital and publishing platforms.
According to the press release:
“Powered teens Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Quake, Patriot, America Chavez, and Inferno join forces as an unlikely, but formidable crew of aspiring heroes. When a threat no one could have expected bears down on the Marvel Universe, this ragtag, untrained band of teens have no choice but to rise together and prove to the world that sometimes the difference between a 'hero' and 'misfit' is just in the name.
Speaking of names, Marvel’s got a bunch of them providing fresh voices for this fresh batch of heroes, including Gwen Stacy aka Ghost-Spider (formerly Spider Gwen) voiced by Dove Cameron (Descendants), Daisy Johnson aka Quake voiced by Chloe Bennet (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dante Pertuz aka Inferno voiced by Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Victor Kohl aka Exile voiced by BooBoo Stewart (The Twilight Saga), Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel voiced by Kathreen Khavari (Marvel’s Avengers Assemble), Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl voiced by Milana Vayntrub (Marvel’s New Warriors), America Chavez voiced by Cierra Ramirez (The Fosters), Rayshaun Lucas aka Patriot voiced by Kamil McFadden (K.C. Undercover), Gloria “Glory” Grant voiced by Skai Jackson (Bunk’d), Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel voiced by Kim Raver (24), Hala voiced by Ming-Na Wen (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Captain George Stacy voiced by Steven Weber (13 Reasons Why), Lockjaw and Tippy Toe voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (Star Wars Rebels).
As far as the creative team goes, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors is being exec-produced by Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley, Cort Lane, and Eric Radomski, with co-exec producers Stan Lee, Sana Amanat, and Marsha Griffin. Mairghread Scott wrote the feature and shorts, with Alfred Gimeno handling supervising director duties.
