You might have noticed the hints surrounding the long-time friendship between the characters of Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with their humorous bantering about past exploits battling the Empire and reference to the Force-bound "Guardians of the Whills."
Now the rebel duo will get a chance to be resurrected in print and shine on in the new novel, Star Wars: Guardians of the Whills, written by comics veteran Greg Rucka (Star Wars: Shattered Empire, Batman).
This boisterous backstory adventure will chronicle Baze and Chirrut's earlier days of protecting the hallowed grounds of Jedha's Kyber Temple from Imperial encroachment and their encounter with the grizzled combat general of the Clone Wars, Saw Gerrera.
Rucka has previous experience writing in the Star Wars universe with the 2015 tie-in novels, Star Wars: Before the Awakening and Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Smuggler's Run: A Han Solo Adventure.
Here's the official press release description:
"Baze and Chirrut used to be Guardians of the Whills, who looked after the Kyber Temple on Jedha and all those who worshipped there. Then the Empire came and took over the planet. The temple was destroyed and the people scattered. Now Baze and Chirrut do what they can to resist the Empire and protect the people of Jedha, but it never seems to be enough. When a man named Saw Gerrera arrives with grand plans to take down the Empire, it seems like the perfect way for Baze and Chirrut to make a real difference and help the people of Jedha. But will it come at too great a cost?"
Are you curious to see Baze and Chirrut back in action again, or should their spirits rest in peace after the epic skirmish on Scarif?
Greg Rucka's Star Wars: Guardians of the Whills lands in bookstores on May 2.
