This summer, Mark Ruffalo has giant shoes to fill. He'll appear as Bruce Banner and his alter ego the Hulk in Marvel's The Avengers. When it comes to film versions of the character, Ruffalo is picking up where Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk) and Eric Bana (Hulk) left off. So what will make his incarnation so special?
Ruffalo's Hulk will actually look like him. A new photo from The Avengers has surfaced, and it gets up close and personal with the hero's face.
When it comes to The Avengers, every image of the Hulk features him screaming. His face is scrunched up, and you can barely see any details. But in this photo, he's in rare form. He's relaxed and looks very familiar.
When director Joss Whedon took on The Avengers, he knew he wanted to give the Hulk a makeover.
"In the comics, Bruce Banner and the Hulk didn't look the same," said Whedon. "On the television show they were different actors, and they've always been an actor and a CGI creature in the films, but now with the advancements of motion capture technology, we wanted Mark Ruffalo to play both sides of the character."
He continued, "Very early on we decided to build the Hulk's face off of Mark's, not just in terms of what he was going to do movement-wise in playing the character, but also the actual physicality of it, including the bone structure and contours of the eyes and mouth. We really wanted to bridge the gap between the characters so that when he turns into the Hulk, you go, 'Oh my God, that's Bruce Banner! Only he is big and green and very angry!'"
Judging from this photo, he got the desired effect. The Hulk really looks like a roided-up Ruffalo!
