The first footage from Tomorrowland is finally here, and it's taking us to a miraculous place.
Nearly two years ago, our curiosity about Tomorrowland began with what was quite literally a Mystery Box photo from writer Damon Lindelof. Now Lindelof and director Brad Bird are beginning to peel back the layers on what Tomorrowland is, and we're getting excited. Just a day after the first images from the film were revealed, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the first teaser trailer, and though the titular realm doesn't appear all that much, the footage is teeming with possibility.
Named for the Disney theme park attraction that offers a gleaming, retro-style peek into an imagined future, the film stars Under the Dome's Britt Robertson as Casey Newton, a teenager with a rough life who finds a mysterious pin that, as soon as she touches it, transports her to another world. This discovery takes her on a search for answers about just what this other world is, and on the way she meets former boy genius Frank Walker (George Clooney), who knows the secrets of Tomorrowland but isn't necessarily willing to share them.
“Frank Walker is someone who knows how to get there, and it wouldn’t be a good movie if he weren’t somewhat resistant to that idea,” Lindelof said. “Age will make you a little more cynical, a little more of a curmudgeon. Something happened to him. So how did this young idealistic kid become someone who is world-weary and borderline antagonistic about the future? He’s a very grumpy Obi-Wan Kenobi character — minus the beard.”
The teaser features Casey's discovery of the pin, her first glimpse at the other world, and voiceover from Walker, who talks up Tomorrowland as a place where you can change the world. At the very end, we get a few seconds of footage that actually looks to be set inside the mysterious Tomorrowland, and though it's blink-and-you'll-miss-it quick, it's certainly a memorable tease.
