November 15 in Sci-Fi History: Shailene, Ed and Kevin

This day in sci-fi history gave us two pretty notable actors a couple of generations apart.

It was on this day in 1929 that Ed Asner was born. He's most famous for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show but he's also played Santa Claus a billion different times.

Asner was also incredibly moving as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Up (2009).

Today is also a good time to celebrate Shailene Woodley, who was born on this day in 1991 in Simi Valley. An Academy Award nominee for The Descendants (2011), Woodley anchored the strangely compelling Divergent movies.

Today is also the birthday of Kevin J. O'Connor, born on this day in 1963. One of our all-time favorite character actors, Kevin played stage magician Philip Swann in Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions (1995), but it's when he works with director Stephen Sommers that he really shines. Really, his Igor might be the best thing about Van Helsing (2004), and he was highly amusing in both Deep Rising (1998) and The Mummy (1999).

Kevin was also Dr. Mindbender in Sommers' G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and played the mysterious Yellow Card Man in Hulu's Stephen King adaptation, 11.22.63 (2016).

Tomorrow: Close Encounters.
