A joking plea to cast an Oscar-winning actress as a member of the X-Men has taken on a life of its own.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, it all started last week when a woman named Jamie Broadnax, who uses the handle BlackGirlsNerds on Twitter, posted the following: "I volunteer as tribute to lead a social media charge to get Lupita cast as Storm!”
"Lupita," of course, is Lupita Nyong'o, the Kenyan actress whose astonishing feature-film debut as a slave named Patsey in the movie 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award earlier this month for Best Supporting Actress.
Broadnax, after seeing her initial post get retweeted 151 times and favorited 166 times, decided to take things one step further. She created an online petition formally asking Fox -- which controls the X-Men franchise -- and Marvel to consider casting Nyong'o as Ororo Munroe, the half-Kenyan mutant with the ability to control the weather.
As the petition puts it, Nyong'o "has the accent, the look and the acting chops to play Storm as the comic book intended."
While that's probably true -- Nyong'o is one hell of an actress -- the problem is that Storm is already played by another Oscar winner, Halle Berry, who is making her fourth appearance as Ororo in this summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past after an eight-year break from the series.
That doesn't mean that the role can't or won't be recast at some point, especially with the series traveling backward in time to showcase a younger X-Men team. And while we admire Broadnax's enthusiasm for the idea, her petition -- which is up at Change.org -- has a long way to go before it reaches its goal of 50,000 signatures.
Have you seen Nyong'o's work in 12 Years a Slave, and do you think she'd make a good Storm if the character is ever recast, rebooted or retconned?
