Pacific Rim Uprising trailer lands stop-motion LEGO remix

The rock-em-sock-em world of Pacific Rim is no stranger to the equally silly world of LEGO, and now they’ve been combined. Pacific Rim Uprising takes the core concept of the “giant fighting robot vs. giant alien critter” genre and injects it with enough John Boyega to keep its Jaegers from growing rusty and stale.

Director Steven S. DeKnight has big shoes to fill now that Guillermo del Toro, director of the original film, has a Best Director Oscar in his pocket, but if he goes the way of Brick FORCE Studios, he’ll certainly have a distinctive look for his sequel. The team re-created the trailer for the new movie using stop-motion animation and a Kaiju-load of bricks.

Just watch:

How is LEGO Idris Elba just as charming as flesh-and-blood Idris Elba? It boggles the mind. As does this trailer, which eschews the silly humor usually associated with LEGO versions of popular properties for a more serious and epic take on the assault on Earth by the biggest cousins Godzilla has ever seen.

The Kaiju may destroy cities, but these Jaegers will rebuild them — brick by brick.

Pacific Rim Uprising breaches into theaters on March 23, 2018.
