Guillermo del Toro has never made a movie in 3D and had no intention of doing so with his upcoming Pacific Rim. Unfortunately, he's been overruled.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures has laid down the law: Pacific Rim, which was shot in 2D, will be converted to 3D for its release next summer. The director has said in interviews that he did not want to convert the movie because of the sheer size of the robots and kaiju monsters that battle each other in the apocalyptic sci-fi epic.
But money rules everything, and the studio no doubt couldn't resist the higher ticket prices for a 3D release, so Pacific Rim will be converted in time for its July 12 arrival.
To be fair, the movie will be offered in 2D as well, and we suspect that Del Toro will do the best job he possibly can with the 3D conversion. But we know which one we'll want to see -- what about you?
