With The Governor’s story long over, Walking Dead fans have been wondering when we might meet the next Big Bad from the comic canon. Turns out it could be this year.
In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Scott M. Gimple was asked about the prospects of meeting Negan in the series’ upcoming sixth season. If you’re unfamiliar, Negan is the leader of a violent, well-organized group called The Saviors. He becomes a major factor in the comic not long after Rick and the other survivors join Alexandria, and that storyline eventually leads into an arc called “All Out War.” We’d imagine you can pretty much put together the context clues there.
According to Gimple, they have a plan in place to introduce Negan, and — depending on how the variables shake out — he could show up before Season 6 ends. Regardless, at least judging by his comments, it sounds like Negan won’t become a major factor until late in the season (if not the next season). Check out an excerpt below:
“It’s absolutely a possibility. And when I say it’s a possibility, we have a plan in place, but there’s a couple variables for that plan that we’re deciding about. It really depends on a few factors as we move into setting up the last bit of the season story-wise.”
Considering we’ll be knee-deep in Alexandria, it makes sense that Negan should be looming on the horizon in Season 6. He plays a key role in Rick’s evolution in the comic and is directly responsible for the deaths of some major (and we mean major) characters. Considering how much time the TV series spent on The Governor, you’d have to think Negan (who is a much bigger threat) would get even more attention.
What do you think? When do you expect Negan and his trademark baseball bat Lucille to make an introduction?
