We've still got a few months to go until Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim rampages into theaters, but today we've got a few new pics of robot fighting madness to tide us over.
By now you've probably heard what this movie's about: Giant monsters called "Kaiju" rise up from the sea and devastate the Earth, so humanity must fight back with giant robots known as "Jaegers." That's enough to get us excited right there. Throw in del Toro's expected visual wizardry and we're practically shaking with anticipation. Plus, del Toro's beginning to open up a bit more about what went into crafting the film. In addition to all its Japanese Kaiju homages, he says he's also thrown some American Western cinema influence into the mix. Here's what he told USA Today:
"The Jaeger station is 'basically the Alamo,' del Toro says, and there are rangers and marshals within it — most notably Marshal Stacker Pentecost, a spiritual, moral leader played by Idris Elba. 'He’s not playing second banana. He’s at the center of the conflict. He’s the only guy who cannot give up.'"
So, to sum up, we've got a Japanese-American sci-fi western disaster adventure monster movie directed by one of the most acclaimed genre filmmakers of his generation. Check out the pics below and see if they don't get you fired up to see more.
Pacific Rim hits theaters July 12.
