Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a major holiday occasion. They've got big plots, big guest stars, and usually a bit of Christmas fun along the way. This year's special, "Twice Upon a Time," carries with it a particularly heavy weight.

It's become a bit of a tradition in the modern era of Who that the Christmas special is where one Doctor makes his exit and another makes his (or her, as we can happily say now) entrance. David Tennant's proper debut (apart from his regeneration scene) was made in "The Christmas Invasion," Matt Smith first appeared in "The End of Time," and Peter Capaldi first appeared in "The Time of the Doctor," Christmas specials all. "Twice Upon a Time," the 2017 installment of the annual holiday tradition, is about more than one regeneration.

This year, the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) will find himself encountering his very first incarnation, the First Doctor (originally played by William Hartnell, and played here by Game of Thrones star David Bradley) as they team up to battle an alien threat at the South Pole. "Twice Upon a Time," as we've known for quite a while, will mark Capaldi's departure from the TARDIS, but it will also mark the departure of showrunner Steven Moffat, who's been steering the show since 2010. And it will also mark the departure of Pearl Mackie as Twelve's companion, Bill. There will be a lot of goodbyes this Christmas.

As such, BBC America has announced that "Twice Upon a Time" will be followed by a special retrospective titled Doctor Who: Farewell to Peter Capaldi. The special will feature interviews with Capaldi and Moffat, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of things like Capaldi's first and last table reads as the Twelfth Doctor.

To add further anticipation, the BBC has just released a new 30-second teaser for "Twice Upon a Time." It's rather light on plot but features an emotional moment between The Doctor and Bill, and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it peek at Twelve regenerating. Because oh yeah, as if all this weren't momentous enough, the Christmas special will also feature the first appearance of Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to play the role, as the Thirteenth Doctor. She'll also be joined by new showrunner Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) as he takes the reins from Moffat.

"Twice Upon a Time" airs Christmas Day at 9 p.m. EST on BBC America. Check out the teaser below.
