Writer David F. Walker is bananas over Planet of the Apes and has applied his love of the franchise in two previous Planet of the Apes-based comic series: the Dark Horse and Boom! Studios crossover, Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes, and Boom!'s War for the Planet of the Apes prequel title.
His latest venture into the wild Apes sandbox is a new six-issue miniseries, Planet of the Apes: Ursus, with Walker's words paired with Five Ghosts' artist Christopher Mooneyham in a military mission into the Forbidden Zone starring the notoriously ill-tempered General Ursus.
This adventurous yarn chronicles the ambitious rise of the ruthless, Man-hating gorilla commander as part of Boom!'s year-long tribute to the 50th anniversary of the iconic film franchise. The power-hungry character debuted in 1970’s Beneath the Planet of the Apes (played by James Gregory) and made quite an impression on Walker as a child.
"I've loved Planet of the Apes since I was a little kid, and at the same time I was endlessly fascinated and terrified by General Ursus," Walker told SYFY WIRE. "Of all the supporting characters in POTA lore, few, if any are as memorable as Ursus, but his story has never been told."
Walker has wanted to explore what makes this gorilla tick for decades, to give him a defining depth of character and emotional complexity deserving of the best villains.
