I vividly remember seeing the concept art images for Star Wars in a few fanzines back in the '70s, and being stunned by the insectoid, black-armored villain brandishing a laser sword, as conceived by artist Ralph McQuarrie. His vast vision is one of the main reasons the Star Wars Saga left such an indelible impression on its audiences, and Sideshow Collectibles has paid tribute to the master with this gorgeous new Darth Vader statue inspired by his original drawings.
McQuarrie's Vader was first announced last May as part of Sideshow's Concept Artist Series, but all we were shown were promo shots and prototype images. Now the limited run of 1500 is available for purchase, and a new batch of production shots has been released. It's a striking, streamlined version of the Dark Lord atop a custom tiered base. Emanating from early designs of the classic Star Wars character, the statue beautifully reflects McQuarrie's unique style and dramatic posturing. It's available now at Sideshow Collectibles' site for $474.99.
Here's the official description and an intimidating gallery of images below:
"When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, 'Do it like this.'"– George Lucas
Sideshow artists spend a lot of time creating 3D representations of some of the most recognizable pop-culture icons in the world and, for that reason, we are honored to present the Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader Statue – part of our Concept Artist Series.
Ralph McQuarrie is the man who gave us the design and visual representation of Darth Vader, and our statue has been created based on his original illustrations.
Standing just under two feet tall, this polystone piece is our homage to the man who gave us one of the most amazing characters to ever take the screen.
