Doctor Who’s River Song is set to make her triumphant return to the Whoniverse next year — but it won’t be with Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, or on TV, for that matter.
Instead, River (voiced by Alex Kingston) will cross paths with Paul McGann’s Eighth Time Lord in Big Finish’s radio drama Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2 next February.
That means that she’ll meet up with her future hubby two incarnations before he meets her for the first time as the Tenth Doctor (played by David Tennant) in the Season 4 two-parter "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead," which aired back in 2008. This, in turn, could be a tad problematic for Alex Kingston’s time-traveling archaeologist: She must help her beloved Time Lord without him finding out who she is, or even without him seeing her in the first place.
Producer David Richardson said:
"The idea of River meeting previous Doctors was actually proposed by Steven Moffat, and it's just irresistible, isn't it? Alex embraced the idea of returning to the role, and so she will be starring in no less than two box sets next year. And yes, we are still pinching ourselves!"
Along with Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2, River will also return for a second four-hour Big Finish adventure in 2016, called The Diary of River Song. In it, River will once again join up with Paul McGann’s Doctor as she crosses all of time and space in order to seek the "secret rulers of the universe."
What do you think? Are you looking forward to stepping aboard not one, but two River Song/Eighth Doctor adventures?
