This popular actress and geek favorite may now have a foot in both Marvel universes.

According to The Wrap, Rosario Dawson is in talks to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes in New Mutants, the upcoming entry in the X-Men franchise that has already landed Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as stars.

Reyes first appeared in the comics in June 1997, when she debuted in X-Men Vol. 2 #65. A medical doctor who worked in a trauma center in the South Bronx, she initially rejected an offer to join the X-Men when her mutant power became active, although she has fought alongside them or gotten swept up in various storylines in the ensuing two decades.

Her main mutant power is the ability to generate a psioplasmic bio-field that can extend for six inches outward from any part of her body. It offers her protection, durability and even weaponry as she can form it into different shapes.

Dawson is one of that small handful of actors who, if she takes the job, will be a member of both the official Marvel Studios universe and the 20th Century Fox version that encompasses the X-Men, Deadpool, Fantastic Four and others. Dawson has played nurse Claire Temple on all four Marvel/Netflix TV shows that have premiered so far -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist -- and will appear on The Defenders this August.

New Mutants, focusing on a new generation of mutant superheroes-in-training, will start production this July under the direction of Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). Boone himself spoke about the project in a new interview published today by EW, calling it "a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

Boone said his primary inspiration for the movie is the 1984 run drawn by legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz, which Boone called “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”

New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 13, 2018. Do you like the way this is shaping up?
