Looks like Rosario Dawson won't be part of two Marvel universes after all.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dawson has exited the upcoming New Mutants film, just a few weeks after she was said to be in talks about joining the movie. No reason was given for her departure.
Dawson is already established in the TV arm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she plays Claire Temple on all four Netflix/Marvel series -- Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage -- and will also appear in this August's The Defenders.
It's a relative rarity for an actor to show up in two comic book franchises at the same time -- New Mutants is part of Fox's mini-Marvel X-Men series -- although Josh Brolin is doing it as both Thanos in the MCU and Cable in the now-filming Deadpool 2.
With Dawson out, the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes will now go to Alice Braga, whose genre credits include I Am Legend, The Rite, Predators, and Elysium. She currently stars in the USA Network crime drama Queen of the South.
Braga will join Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) in the latest X-spinoff, which will focus on a new generation of mutant superheroes-in-training.
Director Josh Boone will begin shooting the project next month. He described it to EW recently as "a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe.”
New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 13, 2018.
