Fox’s Gambit film is still looking for a new director after Rupert Wyatt dropped out over creative differences, and now we might have a lead on who is landing the gig.
Both Deadline and The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider are reporting that Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) is at the top of the short list to take over the somewhat troubled production. Along with Wyatt’s exit, Channing Tatum’s involvement was also on the ropes due to some last-minute contract negotiations, though he eventually cut a deal to star.
According to the reports, Tatum is very high on getting Liman signed on, which could go a long way toward closing the deal. Tatum has almost willed this project into existence, so it stands to reason he’d have some pull. Plus, Liman is a solid director and definitely has the action chops to full off an X-Men spinoff. (Go watch Edge of Tomorrow if you haven’t. Go on, we’ll wait.)
Fox is committed to getting the film on the big screen by late 2016, so it stands to reason they’ll need to sign on a new director now-ish. Do you think Liman is the man for the job?
