All we really know about the Star Wars spinoff prequel Rogue One is that it will focus on a Rebel team attempting to steal the Death Star plans. Well, this could explain how the good guys get ahold of them.
A new report via Making Star Wars has surfaced that claims the plot will focus on a scientist tentatively named Galen (played by Hannibal alum Mads Mikkelsen), who is key to developing the first Death Star project. The report notes the character “solved several of the flaws the Empire could not and is sort of a revered person in the Empire for his contributions.” But once he comes to terms with the fact that he’s built a planet-destroying weapon, he starts to regret his life’s work.
Galen apparently then defects and teams up with/helps his daughter (played by Felicity Jones) to try and “undo the devastation her family has unleashed onto the galaxy.” That’s actually a fairly interesting angle, if they’re inclined to take the story in that direction, and it adds a more human face to the Empire and the often-faceless baddies who serve it (much as Finn did in The Force Awakens). Of course, it also punches its "Everyone Must Be Related" box, which is apparently required for all Star Wars films.
Tossing in some human drama with the big, space-based heist story that directly precedes the events of Star Wars: A New Hope? Yeah, this could be fun — and hopefully a worthy distraction while we wait for Episode VIII.
What do you think? Is this a good direction to take the story?
