While we wait with bated breath for the next Marvel Netflix series, Luke Cage, a rumor has emerged concerning the main villain our heroes will face in The Defenders.
According to Screen Geek, the identity of the mighty Big Bad that Charlie Cox's Daredevil, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage and Finn Jones' Iron Fist will go up against in their first team-up series has been revealed. The site claims that an unnamed source close to what I assume is production has told them the Defenders will fight Mephisto, who will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the TV series.
In the Marvel Comics, Mephisto is an extra-dimensional demon who rules a fiery pocket dimension he calls Hell or Hades, which is actually neither the Hell of the Christians nor the Hades ruled by the Olympian god Pluto (Hades). A demon of immense power, Mephisto often poses as Satan and continually schemes to make bargains with people for their souls. He especially craves the souls of our heroes because of their purity – especially that of the Silver Surfer – and has often faced off against Doctor Strange (who's getting his own movie on Nov. 4), Daredevil, Thor, the Fantastic Four and more.
As always, please remember this is an unconfirmed rumor, so take this with the appropriate dose of salt. If it turns out the be true, however, it'll be cool-as-hell. Pun intended. Here’s what they say:
“Marvel is talking about setting Mephisto as the prime antagonist for the Defenders. Some may say that this villain wouldn’t fit the TV shows but that’s why they’re incorporating Iron Fist – to set up the supernatural element. This would also help set up the next phase of the Netflix shows, as Moon Knight, Blade, and Ghost Rider are being considered.”
Now, this is the site that reported Vincent D’Onofrio's Daredevil baddie Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, would be in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but that rumor was quickly debunked. However, I admit the idea of Mephisto being the major Big Bad instead of The Hand (all signs point to them) would definitely be the more exciting option and would indeed nicely set up new rumored series Moon Knight, Blade and Ghost Rider.
What do you guys think? Would you like to see our heroes battle Mephisto in The Defenders?
