A new rumor is making the rounds that 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi will leave Doctor Who when showrunner Steven Moffat hands over the TARDIS keys to Chris Chibnall in 2017. New showrunner, new Doctor?
When Russell T Davies and David Tennant both left the series in 2010, Steven Moffat began his run as the new showrunner by bringing personal choice Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, getting him a brand-new TARDIS as well as new companions in Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill).
The Mirror (so take this as the rumor it very much is) reported earlier today that a source working on the BBC series has said:
“Bosses are already discussing a fresh start when Steven leaves. They’ve been happy with what Peter has brought to the role but some think it might make sense to give Chris his own choice of actor to play the Doctor. They hope he will be able to find someone who can have the same impact as Matt Smith did when Steven Moffat kicked off his run as executive producer.”
It would make perfect sense for Chris Chibnall to want to start his gig as the new Who showrunner with his very own Time Lord, and for Capaldi to regenerate into a new Doctor when Moffat leaves. Question is, who can possibly replace him as the 13th Doctor? Until then Capaldi is signed on for Season 10 but, beyond that, a BBC spokesman said, “We don’t discuss contracts.”
Do you think Peter Capaldi will also leave Doctor Who when Steven Moffat does? Or do you believe he'll stick around for the Chibnall Era?
