A rumor has just emerged that the third Wolverine movie -- which'll be Hugh Jackman's last hurrah in the role of the adamantium-clad Canadian mutant -- will be based on Marvel's "Old Man Logan" storyline.
The news was reported by Umberto Gozalez, aka El Mayimbe, during a video episode of Popcorn Talk’s Marvel Movie News. Gonzalez suggests that the third Wolverine movie will be based on the "Old Man Logan" storyline from the Marvel comics.
"Old Man Logan" was the brainchild of artist Steve McNiven and writer Mark Millar, and it ran from 2008-2009 in the pages of the ongoing Wolverine comic-book series. The story is set in a dystopian future where the supervillains have banded together to eliminate all of the wold’s superheroes in one go.
Comicbook.com says that, if the rumor pans out to be true, the film can only be based very loosely on "Old Man Logan," because Wolverine and Emma Frost are the only two X-Men characters in the story. The rest are made up of MCU characters controlled by Marvel Studios, not Fox.
Those characters are Hulk, Hawkeye, Mysterio and the Red Skull. They suggest that Mysterio could be replaced by Mastermind or any other psychic mutant, and say that adapting the story would mean a boatload of rewrites. However, since Mark Millar himself is consulting for Fox, he’s definitely the right man for the job. What do you think?
The third Wolverine movie is set to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
