Not content with just taking on an iconic superhero role, one of the stars of The Avengers is rumored to be in talks to play Snake Plissken in the upcoming remake of Escape From New York.
This is very much in the rumor stage, but Bloody Disgusting reports that Jeremy Renner is close to landing the part of war-hero-turned-criminal Plissken, played to near-perfection by Kurt Russell in the original 1981 film, directed by John Carpenter.
Renner, who became an A-list star after his Oscar-nominated performance in The Hurt Locker and who has also been acclaimed for his work in The Town, was cast by Marvel Studios earlier this year as Hawkeye in The Avengers. That was made official when Renner joined other Avengers cast members Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Samuel Jackon, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, etc., onstage at Comic-Con in July.
The long-in-the-works Escape remake is being directed by Breck Eisner, who helmed the remake of The Crazies earlier this year. The new Escape supposedly sticks closely to the original's story, in which Plissken is given a chance at redeeming himself by rescuing the president when Air Force One crashes on the island of Manhattan, now a gigantic, sealed-off, gang-ruled prison.
None of this is official yet, but if it happens, what do you think of Renner taking on a role so strongly identified with Kurt Russell?
