Remember how the opening scene of The Dark Knight played in front of IMAX showings of I Am Legend a few years back? Well, something similar might be in the works for The Dark Knight Rises.
According to Slashfilm, an exhibitor source—that is, someone connected with a movie theater chain—claims that an eight-minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises will be shown with all IMAX prints of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Mission Impossible opens on IMAX screens on Dec. 16, a full five days before it launches on regular screens on the 21st.
Warner Bros. Pictures, the company releasing The Dark Knight Rises, did the same thing in 2007 by putting the opening bank heist from The Dark Knight in front of IMAX showings of I Am Legend, which was also a Warner Bros. film. Since the studio doesn't have its own IMAX release during the upcoming holiday season, it seems they've struck a deal with Mission Impossible distributors Paramount.
If this is true, it sounds like a win-win for all concerned: Batman fans get their first huge look at The Dark Knight Rises, IMAX theaters get more butts in seats, and Mission Impossible might even sell a few more tickets to people who are really just there for the Dark Knight Rises footage.
Slashfilm says Warner Bros. had no comment on the rumor, which makes us think this might be happening for real. If that's the case, will you go see Mission Impossible in IMAX just to get your first look at the most anticipated film of 2012, if not the decade?
