Joss Whedon built his reputation on vampires. Vampires, in many ways, are the reason he gets to do mega-awesome projects like The Avengers. Now Whedon might be arranging a meet and greet between bloodsuckers and superheroes for the Avengers post-credits sequence. But why?
This rumor is extra rumor-y, because it comes not from an on-set photo or an inside source, but from that always-reliable fountain of data, IMDB. One eagle-eyed fan was scanning the film's full credits page on the site when he came across the name of stuntman J.J. Perry—a frequent Whedon collaborator who's done work on Angel and Firefly—in an uncredited role as "Vampire in post-credits scene."
As the film is still in post-production, and as IMDB has often jumped the gun on its cast lists, whether this is true is anybody's guess. But if it is, what does that mean for the future of the franchise? Will The Avengers 2 end up being the story of Iron Man the Vampire Slayer? Is Black Widow going to fall in love with a sparkly bloodsucker? Will Nick Fury meet Dracula?
Given that it's a Marvel movie, there's another explanation that could prove far more intriguing. Marvel Comics has two rather notable vampiric characters on its roster. One of them—Blade—already has his own movie franchise. That leaves Morbius, the Living Vampire, a character first introduced in the early '70s as a Spider-Man villain who became a frequent nemesis of Blade and even a tragic hero in his own right. In some stories, he even teamed up with S.H.I.E.L.D.
Whether Morbius is about to make his entrance into the Marvel Movie Universe or whether Whedon is just being plain self-referential is unclear, but we've just been given a whole new dimension of The Avengers to ponder.
