She may not be telling us what the part is, but Saoirse Ronan just dropped a huge Star Wars buzzword when talking about her recent Episode VII audition.
We've known for a few days now that Ronan, who's earned acclaim for her work in films like Hanna, The Lovely Bones and Atonement, did in fact go in to audition for director J.J. Abrams' forthcoming continuation of George Lucas' epic space opera, but the first time we heard about it Ronan was quick to point out that she was only one of many actresses vying for a single role. She also was quick to note that she couldn't say more about her audition or someone would "chop off her head with a lightsaber."
But of course, the questions about her audition didn't end there. Ronan was on Empire Magazine's podcast this week to talk about her career in general and her new film, How I Live Now, and was asked again to confirm that she did audition. She confirmed it, and then went into a little more detail about just how many people are auditioning and just how much she knows. Check out the quote below, and see if you can spot a very intriguing piece of Star Wars lingo that could give us a character clue.
“Yeah, I don’t know whether I should have said that now! Yeah, I did [audition]. I mean, everyone did, you know? Everyone has auditioned for it. There's so many people I know that have gone in for the part that I’ve gone in for, and guys who’ve gone in for a particular part, so I’d imagine J.J. is literally just scanning the earth to find the people that he needs," Ronan said. "But nobody has a clue what it’s about, nobody’s read the script, you know, nobody's who's kind of directly involved in it. So, yeah. So, I mean I’ve gone in and read for it, but I have to say, I think it’s the only time where I’ve ever thought, ‘You know what? Even if I don’t get it, I had so much fun auditioning, and pretending to take out a lightsaber out of a bag, and kind of inspect it and not know what it is. That was… that was great. A lightsaber! Star Wars!”
A lightsaber, you say? Well, there aren't many of those floating around the galaxy (that we know of) in a post-Return of the Jedi world, so whose could that be? Could Ronan have, as rumored, been auditioning for the role of Han Solo and Leia Organa's daughter, and could that lightsaber have perhaps belonged to her Jedi Uncle Luke?
It's always possible that whatever Ronan was asked to do in her audition was written specifically as an audition piece, and has no real bearing on what the actual film will depict, but still, lightsabers are presumably still rare things at the time of Episode VII, and if that's the case very few characters would have real access to them ... but a character like Jaina Solo just might.
What do you think? Can we consider this proof of what part Ronan auditioned for, or is it too flimsy?
