As Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson fights alongside superhumans like Captain America and Thor ... which is probably about the only situation that could give Natalia Romanova an inferiority complex. Now, however, Johansson finally gets to see how the other half lives in Lucy. She plays the title character in Luc Besson's latest action film, which centers on a drug mule gone rogue.
Lucy is captured and injected with packages of an illegal substance. It's her job to get them to a buyer, but something unexpected happens along the way. When she's brutally attacked, the drugs are released and absorbed into her system. They unlock her brain and allow her to access her body's full potential, with some potent results.
Some of her new gifts include telekinesis, self defense, speed and hyperintelligence. And that's just what we see in the trailer. Besson's no stranger to directing powerful women. He told EW, “I love to see a woman as a very strong character. It’s like cooking: sugar with a bit of salt, and Lucy definitely can get salty.” Some of his previous works include The Professional and La Femme Nikita. Lucy opens in theaters Aug. 8.
