Sean Penn is going to Mars.
In his first regular TV role, the Oscar winner has booked the male lead in a new show for Hulu, who's riding high since the Emmys success of The Handmaid's Tale. Called The First, the sci-fi series will explore the first human mission to Mars, and the attempts to settle the red planet. The show is created and written by Beau Willimon, who created House of Cards for Netflix, the competing streaming service's first original series.
Details of Penn’s role are being kept under wraps, but he is reportedly playing a character named Tom Haggerty, who is believed to be a former NASA astronaut. According to Deadline: "The First follows the first human mission to Mars, exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth."
Penn won Best Actor Oscars for dramatic roles in 2004's Mystic River and 2009's Milk. His few forays into television have been on comedies like Friends and Two and a Half Men.
The First is scheduled to go into production by the end of the year and is scheduled to debut on Hulu and Channel 4 in 2018. Will you be travelling to Mars with Penn then?
