It’s been a long time since we had a Sonic the Hedgehog game that really rocked our socks, but Sega is looking to change that next year — and here’s the proof.
The developer revealed the first trailers for an untitled game called Project Sonic, and a throwback side-scroller called Sonic Mania, and they both actually look really good. The games were officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con, and Sega also confirmed plans for a second season of the surprisingly decent Cartoon Network series Sonic Boom (it’s a legit guilty pleasure, y’all).
Project Sonic looks to be a tentpole release for 2017, and comes from Team Sonic, the group that also created the surprisingly solid Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. It’ll be hitting all the next-gem systems, including PlayStation 4, Nintendo NX, Xbox One and Windows PC. The trailer revealed at SDCC shows modern Sonic and classic Sonic teaming up to lead a resistance against giant robot overlords. Here’s hoping they can tap into the long-lost fun of the last truly great Sonic games from Dreamcast era.
But, it might be Sonic Mania that’s the most interesting project. The throwback side-scroller is steeped in nostalgia, and looks to imagine classic levels from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. Plus some brand-new levels to spice things up. The game is co-developed by Sega of America, PagodaWest Games, and developers Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley. It will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
