Spider-Man: Homecoming was a film full of pleasant surprises, from those Captain America PSAs to how much screen time Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) got in the flick. Among the most pleasant was the reveal that Gwyneth Paltrow was back as Tony Stark's right-hand woman/on-again-off-again girlfriend Pepper Potts. The film marked Paltrow's first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man 3 in 2013, and while her scene was brief, it was great to see Tony, Happy, and Pepper all bantering onscreen together again.
That Paltrow returned to the MCU at all was interesting, particularly since Captain America: Civil War established that she and Tony were "taking a break." It seemed like Paltrow might be done with superhero films, but now she's apparently not only back, but back for an even bigger film.
On Tuesday, the Daily Mail posted photos (which you can check out here) of Paltrow hanging out with Robert Downey Jr., laughing as the two held what appear to be script pages. Tuesday evening, Favreau shared this adorable photo on his Twitter page:
Now, while the hashtag says #infinitywar, we know that the Marvel Studios crew is actually shooting the still-untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War right now. So, if the photo's current, it would seem the band is back together for Avengers 4, which hits theaters in 2019.
We still know very, very little about the fourth Avengers flick, so much so that Marvel has deemed even its title to be a spoiler until Infinity War drops next year. One thing that's certain, though, is that, like its predecessor, Avengers 4 will be absolutely packed with characters, from those with major arcs to those just popping in for a cameo. It seems likely that Pepper, whose last major story unfolded in Iron Man 3, will be the latter.
So, what will she be up to? Well, Homecoming established that she's both rekindled her relationship with Tony and taken an interest in young Peter Parker, plus she would appear to be working at least part-time out of the New Avengers facility. We may get to see her attempting to help manage the team through a crisis, or maybe she's just hanging out with Happy for a scene or two.
Whatever the case, it's good to see Pepper (apparently) back in the fold.
The untitled fourth Avengers film hits theaters May 3, 2019.
