Hulu has a new sci-fi action-comedy series titled Future Man on the way, and we have a first look at the upcoming genre-melding, half-hour TV show.

The brainchild of executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Preacher) and writers Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, Future Man stars Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games) as Josh Futterman, janitor at an STD research laboratory by day, badass gamer in his parents’ basement by night.

When Futterman achieves the high score while playing his favorite video game, Cybergeddon, he’s targeted as the “world-saving messiah” by warriors from the future Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson), who’ve traveled back in time looking for that very Messiah to prevent an apocalyptic future.

The hard-R concept is highly reminiscent of The Last Starfighter, the 1984 movie that saw a skilled video game player getting enlisted to protect the galaxy from an alien invasion. Future Man will take us down the 1980s-era sci-fi nostalgia road and feature a boatload of Star Trek references that should make geeks everywhere happy. Here's what Shaffir told Entertainment Weekly:

“All of us grew up in the era of these amazing movies like Back to the Future and The Terminator. This was an opportunity to lean into the genre, but do it in a funnier way.”

Check out the two images below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to Future Man. Oh, and if you happen to be at SDCC over the weekend, Future Man will have a panel this Saturday from 6:30-7:30p.m. PT in Room 6BCF.
