The next movie going into production from WB and DC Films is Shazam! The ultimate in superhero fantasy fulfilment, Shazam! tells the tale of Billy Batson, a young boy who through the magic word -- the name of an ancient sorcerer -- becomes the mighty Shazam, a hero with incredible powers.

Umberto Gonzalez of Heroic Hollywood first reported the news, which was confirmed Thursday morning by THR.

Shazam! will begin principal photography early in 2018, January or February, and is targeting a 2019 release. Currently, DC Films has April 5, 2019, June 14, 2019, and November 1, 2019, all reserved for as-yet-untitled films, so this will likely slide right into one of those three slots.

The news is surprising, as while Shazam! does have a director, David Sandberg, attached, it does not yet have either of its two stars -- Billy Batson or his heroic persona Shazam -- attached. Meanwhile, The Flash seems to be completely on the back burner at the still-fledging studio arm of DC Entertainment, having lost multiple directors, despite having two versions of a script and most of the main stars already cast. It also seems to confirm that WB/DC are officially abandoning the July 2018 reserved date on their schedule, rather than try to fast-track a film into production.

Dwayne Johnson is attached to play the villain/anti-hero Black Adam, who gets his powers from the same wizard Shazam, but it's currently uncertain whether he'll play the character first in this movie or in the also-in-development Black Adam solo flick.

Earlier this week, WB and DC Films reserved two more 2020 dates, bringing them to eight reserved dates, with 12 films in active development (and as many as three or four others rumored). Expect more DC Films news, including official release date, actor and director attachments for in-development movies, at their Comic-Con panel on Saturday.

Until then, use the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury to exhibit some patience as you await the news.
