Last week, Sony Pictures announced it had tapped Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) to helm Silver and Black, a comic book movie centering on Spidey characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.
Silver and Black is the second Spider-Man offshoot (although evidence points to the fact that neither Venom nor Silver and Black will have much of anything to do with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man) to be announced after Sony revealed Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) had signed on the dotted line to play the titular character in Venom, with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) coming on board to direct the movie from a script penned by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2).
Produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal, the screenplay for Silver and Black was written by Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Although the studio is keeping details of the film under wraps, a new report seemingly has the goods on the Sony movie.
According to one of Splash Report’s sources (meaning it's a rumor for now), there will be no mentions of Peter Parker or the web-slinger in the movie, which will feature: “Dominic Fortune, Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), Roxxon Oil, Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter), Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone) and Charles Standish.” But that’s not all. Here’s what sounds like a synopsis/plot details (again, according to the site’s source, so grain of salt!):
“Seven years after Mendel Stromm (a.k.a. Robot Master) and his two henchmen (The Scorpion and The Tarantula) killed her father, Silver Sable is hired by the government to find Felicia Hardy. The Black Cat, a master hacker and thief, has apparently stolen valuable secret information. She’s hiding in the lawless and dangerous triple frontier area between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.
Once there, Sable ask her old contact Dmitri Smerdyakov (a.k.a. The Chameleon) to locate her. But it seems, the government are not the only ones looking for the Black Cat. It seems Felicia had made a deal Stromm to save her father from a Russian prison and she’s been genetically enhanced. Now, the mad scientist wants his prized experiment back because his financier (cough Norman Osborn cough) wants a return on his investment.”
There you have it. Seems like there’s going to be an awful lot of Spidey characters in a movie that won’t have anything to do with the web-head. If this pans out to be true, could it be that in Sony’s non-MCU Spider-verse our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man doesn’t exist but has Spider-Woman instead? What do you think? Silver and Black is slated to open in 2018.
