Sony's Spider-Man spinoff Venom swings into production

The Spidey-spinoff Venom has officially started production, as we learned from Twitter. The official Venom account tweeted an picture titled "Day #1," meaning this flick is officially on the way.

As far as images go, it’s not the most exciting: three men, one in silhouette, the others obscured, sitting in what appears to be a set of a kitchen. One of them appears to be Tom Hardy, who is attached to star. It’s the kind of picture that says “art shot.”

Still, it's exciting because it means the upcoming movie is swinging into production.

For those of you who need a refresher on this particular poison, Venom, a.k.a. Eddie Brock, is a Spider-Man villain-turned-anti-hero with a tumultuous past. Brock had been a reporter, but he was disgraced when he publicly and mistakenly named a serial killer—at the same time Spidey had caught the real killer. After losing his job and his wife, Brock aimed his rage squarely at the Web-Head.

And when he bonds with an alien symbiote, he then has the power to take on his Spider-foe.

The character made his first appearance in 1988, and since then, he and Spidey have tangled their webs multiple times. But Venom has his own morality and has used his powers to defend the homeless—and planet Earth. He's ranged from straight-up baddie to anti-hero at times, so it'll be interesting to see where Hardy takes the character.

Venom will star Tom Hardy as the eponymous character. He will be joined by Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed in unknown roles.

Venom is on track for its October 5, 2018, release date.
