Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has just landed the lead role in Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim 2, Deadline reports. The actor will play the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the first film. How cool is that?
Just last month, Derek Conolly, who co-wrote Jurassic World with director Colin Trevorrow, was brought on board to pen the action/adventure/sci-fi movie, and while Guillermo del Toro helmed Pacific Rim in 2013, it’s Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus, Angel) who has been handed the commands for the hotly anticipated sequel produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and del Toro. Boyega and Femi Oguns will also produce under their Upper Room Productions company.
Here’s what Guillermo del Toro said about John Boyega’s casting.
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
With Parent saying:
“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”
Boyega is definitely an up-and-coming actor who got his big break with director Joe Cornish’s little alien invasion movie Attack the Block in 2011. He’ll soon be seen alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in the upcoming sci-fi thriller The Circle, and is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VIII. Sense a bit of a trend here? However, there is no news yet as to whether Boyega’s character will be a Jaeger pilot like his dad was -- although that would be the logical thing.
