It has been six months since new episodes of Steven Universe hit Cartoon Network, and the wait is almost over for fresh Steven. New episodes of the beloved cartoon return on November 10, but they won't be on Cartoon Network. Instead, they are coming to the official Cartoon Network app.
The announcement came today via Cartoon Network's official Twitter page, along with a teaser for the new batch of episodes. It looks like Steven is going to have some Halloween fun and, of course, rock out.
There is no explanation as to why the episodes will be on the app and not broadcast, but this isn't the first time the network has done something like this for Steven Universe. In January 2017, Cartoon Network released a "Stevenbomb" (five new episodes) on the app as a promotional gimmick. The episodes aired on the network a few weeks later, which led some fans to think the episodes had been leaked.
One reason for the release on the app could be the controversy the show has faced for its depiction of sexuality and gender issues. Steven embraces the feminine without being mocked; there is Stevonnie, an androgynous fusion character that is a combination of Steven and his friend Connie, and a romantic relationship between Ruby and Sapphire.
Steven Universe follows Steven and his life with the Crystal Gems, magical humanoid aliens with names like Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl. Steven is half-gem, so he takes part in adventures with the Gems, protecting the world from their own kind, while learning about his burgeoning powers.
