If Netflix’s acclaimed series Stranger Things left you jonesing for more Barb, you’re in luck — the young actress who brought her to life just joined The CW’s dark Archie adaptation Riverdale.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Shannon Purser, who played the bespectacled, 1980s-rific Barb, will be playing classic comic character Ethel Muggs on Riverdale. She’s currently signed for “at least” three episodes, but c’mon, you know she’s legit going to steal this show, right?
In the comics, Ethel was typically portrayed as having a crush on Jughead (played by Cole Sprouse in the series). But on Riverdale, she’ll apparently be involved with someone “very different.” Along with the romance angle, Ethel will also be working with Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) on a revenge prop against Archie’s rival Reggie Mantle.
The Riverdale series is being pitched as the sweet spot between the rebooted Archie comic and Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars. It’ll apparently be weaving together high school angst with a murder mystery, which sounds like a perfect fit for The CW, right? Now all we need are some Afterlife With Archie episodes around Halloween, and this’ll be pretty much perfect.
It’s great to see Purser land a new gig so quickly after her breakout role in Stranger Things. She’s a charismatic young actress, and certainly earned more than a few fans thanks to her trip to The Upside Down. We can’t wait to see what she does in Riverdale.
