Raise your hand if you were a child of the ‘80s or early ‘90s who strapped on your plastic proton pack and played Ghostbusters with the rest of the neighborhood kids until you absolutely needed an Ecto Cooler break. Also raise your hand if you spent endless hours rearranging your Playmobil sets. If both of these apply to you, this is going to give you the best flashback ever. Who ya gonna call?
When I first spotted the Real Ghostbusters Mission Packs at the Playmobil booth while wandering sort of aimlessly around New York Comic Con back in October, I got slimed with memories of being that kid who wasn’t afraid of no ghost. There was Spengler in his Cage Car running down the Gozer, Stantz flying his winged Skybike that shoots slime darts, Venkman in a helicopter that sprays slime (okay, water) to annihilate ghosts, and Zeddemore in his Aqua Scooter, speeding after a shocking pink octopus which changes color in warm water.
You can probably imagine how thrilled I was when Venkman came whizzing to my doorstep in that ghost-blasting copter. As with all Playmobil sets, his vehicle requires some assembly, but I’ve always loved putting things together and the directions are much easier to follow than what I would imagine a how-to for an actual proton pack would be. Better than dealing with high-voltage radioactive weapons for sure.

Now it’s time to bust some disembodied spirits. You just have to fill the water tank (go ahead and imagine it’s slime), aim at that creepy neon skele-ghost that wants to vaporize you with huge red lightning bolts, and squeeze it to shoot him down. If he still doesn’t appear quite dead yet — he is dead, but you get the idea — then get Venkman out of the cockpit, strap on his proton pack and activate his gun with atomic rays.
I had more fun with this than I legally should have. I mean, I’m an adult who plays with toys for a living. If anyone else my age could have seen how much fun I was having zooming the helicopter near its target and shooting water at that thing, they would probably have some serious questions.
Not that I care. I think the rest of Venkman’s team will be joining him soon.
