Stuff We Love: Contemplating our HP with this LED Potion Desk Lamp

If you’re a fan of RPGs, then you understand the importance of potions. Whether it’s to replenish your hit points or another important stat, it’s always a good idea to have some potions on hand! I always love the products that are inspired by such aspects of RPGs, so I couldn’t wait to try out ThinkGeek’s exclusive LED Potion Desk Lamp.

The glass bottle (disclosure: item provided by ThinkGeek for review) stands at about 7” tall, and features a base, charm, and cork stopper to add to its fantasy style. The “liquid” inside fills the bottle a little more than halfway and changes colors. You can cause the change by tapping the cork to push the bottle down, because the base makes the colors change. How hard you have to hit the cork to cause the change varies, though. Sometimes only a light tap is needed, others a much harder push. You can also just pick the bottle up and touch the inside of the base to cause the change, but I prefer the convenience of pressing down. The color can remain steady as a solid blue, red, green, or yellow, or it can enter a color changing mode where it shifts into various colors. These colors don’t give off much light, so I wouldn’t recommend using this as an actual lamp. This item is much more a piece that can add some fun RPG atmosphere to your desk with the soft glow that emanates from the bottle.

The bottle can only be turned on and off by plugging it in and unplugging it, which has been highlighted as a downside by others before. While I don’t mind it too much, it is nice to see on the website that ThinkGeek states future models will include such a button. The other thing that may turn people off of this otherwise cool accessory is the price. At $34.99, it can seem expensive to many, since it can’t be used as a real lamp. That’s why it’s important to know all this going in. If you’re like me and just want it for the atmosphere, to maybe turn on while you’re playing Dungeons & Dragons and make your workspace more fun, then it could be worth the price. Otherwise, you might want to wait for a future model, and see what that’s like.

Overall, I was impressed by the look and make of the potion lamp. As someone who owns way too many sci-fi and fantasy trinkets and accessories for display, because I like to have those things around to add to the atmosphere of my space, this potion lamp is a great desk addition that I'll be using again and again!
