Stuff We Love: The unforgettable, sometimes creepy, covers of Animorphs books

Back in the day, I was obsessed with the Animorphs books written by K.A. Applegate. I bought every single book and have kept the collection to this day. I even watched the TV show! I just couldn’t get enough of this group of kids who found themselves suddenly fighting an alien invasion with powers they received from a dying alien that allowed them to transform into animals they touched. This ability to morph—animals, morphing, Animorphs, get it?—led to some pretty interesting things happening in the series and while it always seemed like an awesome ability to have, one thing sometimes made me think twice about that. The book covers.

The Animorphs book covers always showed one of the series’ characters transforming into an animal. It wasn’t a sudden transformation so each image didn’t just show the before and after. It showed all the steps in-between no matter how strange those in-process images might be. These illustrations helped make each book memorable for more than its story. Some though, were just creepy with the middle steps something you did not want to imagine actually happening to someone.

You never knew what was going to be on the cover of the next book, so it was always a guessing game of whether or not it would be a morph that would be exciting or potentially horrifying. You might think for example that changing into a certain animal would be great and then you’d see a cover come out showing the process and start to wonder if it would be worth going through some of those steps!

Whether it was creepy or not though, I always loved the covers. Either way, they were always unforgettable and unique. They became an essential part of the series and one of the most well-known aspects of the books. The impressive and sometimes disturbing covers were just another reason to love Animorphs!
