Many fans were thrilled when Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former padawan who we first met in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, returned in Star Wars Rebels. When we saw Ahsoka in the show, it was clear quite a bit had changed about the character in the years between the two series and one of those changes involved her lightsabers. The former Jedi apprentice wielded two white lightsabers in Rebels instead of her classic green ones. The white blades not only looked awesome in action when Ahsoka used them against everyone from Inquisitors to Darth Vader, but they also turned out to be a perfect fit for who the character had become by the time we see her again in this show.
The origin of the lightsabers is revealed in the novel Ahsoka. They’re the result of lightsaber crystals she takes from the Sixth Brother, an Inquisitor, she defeats. His crystals are red due to dark side corruption and she restores them, hence the resulting new white color. The fact that they turn white and not another color that we’re used to seeing Jedi have on screen is a great representation of who Ahsoka is at this point. As she tells Darth Vader when they meet, she is no Jedi. Of course, she’s not a Sith either. She’s still trying to make a difference and do what’s right, but does not appear to be constrained by the old ways of the Order. Avenging Anakin’s death for example is something she can pursue now that would have been discouraged if she was still a Jedi. Dave Filoni, executive producer of Rebels, has said the white blades reflect her non-affiliation with either side and it’s a brilliant idea. What better way to help symbolize her being in this new place visually than with these stunning white lightsabers?
Whether or not white lightsabers become a bigger part of Star Wars lore in this new canon as a way to represent others who are not aligned with Jedi or Sith, remains to be seen. At the moment, I like that they’re Ahsoka’s alone. The white lightsabers are a fantastic fit for her as really the first character to be explored on screen in this in-between area and I love that they were added to her story. They're a great illustration of who she is now as a Force user and I hope we get to see her in action with them again sometime soon!
