Super Mario Odyssey producer answers hard-hitting questions about Mario's nipples, Toad's head and more

Ever wondered why Mario has visible nipples in Super Mario Odyssey, but no belly button? Probably not, because those aren't things most people are actually concerned with. But just in case you're, for some reason, losing sleep over the answer to that question (which is likely because Mario's swim trunks are simply covering his belly button) Nintendo has released a Q&A video to help make things a little clearer. Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi was on hand to answer gamers' burning questions about some of the design decisions and other Mario mysteries that have cropped up over the years.

About those nipples I referenced—fans' bizarre obsession with Mario's anatomy started when he donned swimwear as an extra costume in one of the large expanses you can explore in the game. He's doffed the shirt that's generally part of his costume and is baring it all. For some inexplicable (and inane) reason, fans latched onto shirtless Mario and his exposed nipples, but kept continually questioning where his belly button was. Like I said, logic dictates that it's just hidden below his high-waisted swim trunks and therefore you just don't see it, but Koizumi had a different answer. Mostly, he just didn't think anyone would ask that question, but he did acknowledge that perhaps the team might "revisit the topic" in the future.

“Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario’s belly button it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side,” Koizumi explained. But they shouldn't, obviously, because who cares? There are more important topics to visit, like Toad's mushroom cap—is it a hat, or is it his actual head?

Koizumi gave a definitive answer for fans, which shouldn't have really come as a surprise. He confirmed that Toad's head is indeed his head, and not a hat, like you may have seen before in certain pieces of Mario-related media, effectively rendered not canon. So that's that. It's Toad's head! “I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out,” Koizumi added during the video about Toad being able to "sometimes" go without his own head like it's a hat. Yeah, we don't know either.

Finally, Koizumi was asked to address the "love triangle" between Pauline, the mayor of New Donk City and the original damsel-in-distress Mario was meant to rescue in Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach. This was obviously a touchy subject, given both of the characters' histories with Mario. One is continually seen with the plumber and it's hinted that they could potentially be in a relationship, but on the other hand, Mario and Pauline have history, too.

Fans wanted to know what the deal was with the love triangle, but Koizumi wisely asked that everyone respect the trio of characters' "privacy" at this time. Looks like we're never going to know what's going on with those three, at least officially. Princess Peach still bakes a mean cake, but Pauline has an amazing set of pipes.

For some more interesting tidbits on Super Mario Odyssey and the series in general, you can watch the full Q&A above. Now if we could just get some clarification on why Daisy hasn't had her own game yet, we'd be good.
