The following recap contains major spoilers for Supergirl Episode 315: "In Search of Lost Time." Catch up with last week's recap here.
The crux of tonight's episode deals with M'yrnn's dementia. It's heartbreaking to watch J'onn deal with his father's dementia. It's also very relatable, as I'm sure most of us remember when one of our parents or grandparents went through the same thing. Alex empathizes with the story of her grandmother losing her driving privileges. I have a similar story about my own grandmother.
However, M'yrnn's dementia is a lot scarier than a senior citizen behind the wheel of a car. His dementia creates a psychic anomaly that causes everyone to become enraged. It starts with an empathic alien in a bar, but when J'onn takes his father to the DEO in the hopes that he can create a psychic shield there, things go horribly awry.
Mon-El trains Kara on how to utilize her cape as a weapon. It doesn't come easily to her, and she gets frustrated to the point where she hits Mon-El — hard. Alex isn't convinced that Kara's frustration is due to M'yrnn's psychic anomaly. After all, Alex wasn't affected (though Winn and another desk jockey were — go figure).
J'onn finally gets his psychic shield in place, but he realizes this isn't a permanent fix. After talking with the Danver girls, he finally accepts that "the son becomes the father, and the father becomes the son." He takes his dad into a psychic dampening room, just to talk, but M'yrnn doesn't take it well. He basically goes supernova and his psychic power causes everyone in the DEO to go bonkers. Employees are fighting one another; the containment cells open and aliens are running amok. Kara, training again with Mon-El, lays into him with all the petty and not-so-petty gripes she had with him during their relationship. Alex calms her down with a psychic disruptor, and she and Winn pass them out to a few other agents.
J'onn tries desperately to talk M'yrnn down, but in his paranoid state, M'yrnn believes J'onn is just trying to trick him. Supergirl takes over for J'onn while he fights an escaped alien, and Supergirl tries to empathize. "I know how hard it is when everything we know to be true changes." This just upsets M'yrnn more, and his psychic powers break the disruptor Supergirl is wearing. J'onn returns, mind-melds with his dad, and M'yrnn finally consents. J'onn clamps the disruptor on his wrist, and everything immediately calms down.
M'yrnn apologizes to everyone at the DEO, and there is a whole big love fest. Kara apologizes to Mon-El, admitting that she missed him so much she romanticized their entire relationship, forgetting about the negatives. They make amends and decide to go for a flight together.
As they fly, Supergirl and Mon-El come across a terrifying sight: Birds are dropping out of the sky, dead. This is the first sign of Pestilence.
Meanwhile, Lena is trying to figure out what is wrong with Sam. Her cells are mutating, and Lena is scared of what this means. She wakes Sam from her medically induced coma and tells her what she fears: that Sam is Reign. Sam flat-out objects to this theory, and is furious at the suggestion. Lena agitates her, but it is when she promises to take Ruby away that Sam goes full Reign.
When Sam wakes, Lena has a video of Sam during her blackout, raging in her cell, destroying everything with her laser eyes. Sam is terrified that it is true and agrees to anything Lena wants to do to save her. She calls Ruby to tell her she has something contagious and has to stay away until she is better. Sam makes Lena swear not to tell her where Ruby is until she has flushed the Reign out of her.
