It might not seem like the most obvious direction to take a crossover between two DC heavyweights, but get to know the actors a bit and it makes perfect sense.
The CW has confirmed The Flash and Supergirl will share a musical crossover event this fall, featuring singing, dancing and even some original superhero tunes. The two leads, Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist, both got their starts on Fox’s Glee — while Flash’s Jesse L. Martin (Joe) also has a great pair of pipes. Not a bad start for a super-super group.
For fans worried it might be ridiculous, just look to Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s “Once More, With Feeling” for a reminder of just how great the musical genre can be when mashed up with sci-fi and fantasy. Producer Greg Berlanti also promises they’re taking caution in how they actually integrate the singing, and at least some songs could take place in the characters’ heads. But, even if it is a mess, heck, it should at least be a good-sounding mess, right?
Here’s an excerpt from what Berlanti told TV Line:
“Yes, there will be a musical crossover. There’s going to be a musical pair of episodes in the back half of the year between Supergirl and The Flash. We have been talking about trying to write at least one original song per episode … We’ve toyed with who potentially the villain could be, [and] we’ll be careful how we break into song.”
Both shows return to The CW this fall, and in case you’re worried about Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow being left out of the fun, he teased that some players from those shows (namely: John Barrowman and Victor Garber) might also pop up for a song or two.
Between the musical event and the previously announced four-show crossover already in the works, this fall is looking like a whole lot of fun.
