If you don't know anything about the Superman/Supergirl mythos, certain B-level character names might not mean anything to you. And that's not a bad thing at all, really. CBS's version of Supergirl is really taking advantage of the fact that so much of her rogues' gallery is pretty unknown.
Even main characters for the show, like Winn Schott, for example, are well connected to villains you maybe, sort of, kind of heard of at some point. And the latest episode of Supergirl will be dealing with precisely one of those characters.
SOMETHING ADJACENT TO SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW AFTER THIS SENTENCE.
In the comics, Winslow Percival Schott went by an alias -- the Toyman! Basically, Schott is a paranoid megalomaniacal villain who makes deadly toys.
And, yeah, OK, that's pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. But Supergirl is making this version of the character one that is clearly mentally ill, but still cares about his son, Winn. And the emotionally complexity is easy to see even in this latest trailer for the next Supergirl episode, "Childish Things."
What's really neat, though, and I think worth mentioning, is that in the Adventures of Superman cartoon series, the Toyman was Winslow's son! So could this be a foreshadowing of things to come? As Kara struggles to fight her own inner demons, will Winn also struggle (and maybe ultimately fail) with fighting demons of his own?
Guess we'll find out! "Childish Things" will air this coming Monday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m. EST.
