Sure, the Arrowverse has carved a path unlike pretty much anything that came before, but the modern-day era of small-screen DC heroes still owes pretty much everything to Smallville. That fact isn’t lost on the Supergirl creative team, so when presented with a flashback story to Kara’s teenage years, they slipped in a not-so-subtle nod to Superman’s own teenage tale.
The most recent episode of Supergirl, “Midvale,” flashed back to when Alex and Kara were teens just trying to fit in and get along — and yes, it definitely has a major Smallville vibe (fans might recognize those super-jumps, by the way). There’s even a little murder mystery thrown in for good measure. So when Kara and Alex need a little help, Kara recommends they contact Clark’s friend “Chloe,” and they even mention she keeps a Wall of Weird.
As Smallville fans immediately picked up on, that seems to be a reference to Chloe Sullivan (played by Allison Mack), Clark’s longtime friend on Smallville. The character was created for the television series, though she was eventually introduced to the comic canon later on. With Supergirl doing its own little homage to Smallville, it was a nice surprise to slip in some easter eggs to make it a bit more fun.
Though some fans are trying to stretch it, this almost certainly does not mean Supergirl is set in the same continuity as Smallville. You’ve had characters played by different actors (most notably Clark Kent himself, by the fantastic Tyler Hoechlin). There’s also the fact that Smallville had its own version of Supergirl, played by Laura Vandervoort. So yeah, it’s a fun easter egg, but probably nothing more than that.
But all that said — we already know there’s a DC multiverse. So yeah, the Smallville universe has got to be out there somewhere, right?
