'Tis definitely the season to be jolly, because the BBC has finally released the first official trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”

It’s been a year since we saw Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor (if we're not counting his guest stint in the first episode of the Doctor Who spinoff Class) in last year’s yuletide special, “The Husbands of River Song,” so it’s with bated breath that we’re counting the days until showrunner Steven Moffat’s new tale hits our TV screens.

The special episode guest-stars Charity Wakefield in the role of an intrepid reporter named Lucy, and Justin Chatwin as a mysterious, high-flying Superman-like superhero known as The Ghost/Grant. Matt Lucas will also reprise the role of Nardole, and the character will be a regular presence when Doctor Who returns for its 10th season in the spring of 2017. The trailer below is everything we can expect from Moffat and the BBC series (the Doctor mentions alien lifeforms and we do have a spaceship), with the bonus of adding a superhero into the mix. Which is very, very cool.

With brain-swapping aliens poised to attack, the Doctor and Nardole link up with an investigative reporter and a mysterious figure known only as The Ghost. Can the Doctor save Manhattan? And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask?

Penned by showrunner Steven Moffat, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” will debut on the BBC, BBC America and Space on Christmas Day.
