This story contains minor spoilers for Terminator: Genisys.
What happens if a fight scene doesn't look good in the editing room? If you have the authority, you can call back the original actors, who may or may not be working on a different movie. You can hire stunt doubles. Or you can re-create the fight scene in CGI. If you're production company Skydance, who is making Terminator: Genisys, you ... choose the special effects over people.
To be fair, effects were already going to play a big part here, as Genisys will feature representations of Arnold Schwarzenegger as he was when the first Terminator appeared in 1984. But rather than reshoot one of the film's fight scenes involving a young Terminator and an old Terminator, Skydance will be creating new footage with not one but two computer-generated Arnold Schwarzeneggers. ComingSoon writes that this will "create new shots that will make the fight 'more brutal.'"
Fan site The Terminator Fans describes a brutal fight scene indeed, which, if you want to be spoiled, can be found here. In a neat trick of continuity, these many fight scenes will take a toll on the older Terminator, which is why Schwarzenegger will appear to have aged 30 years since the first Terminator movie.
We expect the fight scene to look epic, and not just because of cutting-edge technology. According to The Terminator Fans, "the 3D scanning of the 1984 Arnold will be based on the casts taken of Arnold at Stan Winston's studio back when the first movie was made. These models will be extremely accurate."
In the original movie The Terminator, Skynet (an unseen but evil AI) sends a death robot to the past to kill young Sarah Connor before she has the chance to give birth to its enemy, John Connor. But John also sends his friend Kyle Reese to help save her.
As we learned in the trailer, the upcoming Terminator: Genisys shatters the original film's premise -- that Sarah Connor is weak and is in need of protection -- by showing her save Kyle, having been "trained" and protected by another T-800.
Terminator: Genisys will be released on July 1, 2015.
