McG told SCI FI Wire at WonderCon in San Francisco on Saturday that he's still talking with Linda Hamilton about reprising the role of Sarah Connor in his upcoming Terminator Salvation and that he is also meeting with California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger next week about some possible involvement.
The governor has seen the film, McG added, and said it's a matter of the governor's speaking with his staff to see if it's appropriate. "He saw the film two days ago, and I'm scheduled to see him this week," the director said.
McG added: "Truthfully, it's not clear. It's not clear. We'll see where we land. I mean, he's a very powerful guy, he's got to do what's right for him. You know what would be helpful is if all of us collectively put a little pressure in a couple of e-mails saying, 'Hey, we think it would be a good idea.' I mean, we're not getting any blowback or any resistance; I just kind of respect that the guy's the governor of the state of California, and he's got to go back to his advisors and ask them, 'Hey, is this a good idea?' And you never know if they're going to go, 'No, we've done the numbers, and it seems to suggest that people will feel uncomfortable if the governor is dabbling.' Who knows? Who are we to guess?"
Schwarzenegger originated the role of the T-800 Terminator cyborg in James Cameron's original Terminator movie; McG has been hinting that there might be room for Schwarzenegger in some way.
Meanwhile, McG unveiled the film's new theatrical trailer to fans at WonderCon on Saturday.
The new trailer includes a lot of footage that's already been seen, but it also sets up a bit more of the story with references to "replicating human tissue," shows humans in a giant holding pen in some massive factory and offers the first suggestions that Marcus (Sam Worthington) is not entirely human.
After Kate Connor (Bryce Dallas Howard) and John Connor (Christian Bale) have Marcus tied up, John says to him, "You think you're human."
Marcus says, "I am human," before looking down to see ... what? His exposed chest?
In the final scene, we see Marcus' face half torn away to reveal—an endoskeleton underneath? —as he says, "I'm the only hope you have."
The trailer also offered a better look at some of the visual effects of the giant machines, including a massive Harvester robot, a Transporter vehicle, automated motorcyle terminators and flying Hunter Killers. The trailer also highlighted the movie's massive explosions and a collapsing building.
McG also showed two other clips of footage that he's previously screened for press, including the attack at the gas station and subsequent chase and the helicopter encounter with the aquatic hydrobots. Terminator Salvation opens May 21.
