The CW’s Black Lightning has added a Grammy-winning artist to the cast. Entertainment Weekly reports actress and singer Jill Scott — who voiced Marvel character Ororo Munroe/Storm in the 2010 short-lived Black Panther animated series — will play DC villain Lady Eve on the comic book series.
Scott joins a cast that currently includes Cress Williams as the titular character, Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain, Christine Adams, James Remar, Damon Gupton, and rapper Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Season 1 villain Tobias Whale.
A member of Kobra Cult in the comics, Lady Eve will act as the “bridge between Tobias Whale and a secret group of corrupt leaders.” Lady Eve will arrive in Freeland in the guise of a funeral parlor owner who quickly clashes with Black Lightning.
“Jill is an amazing artist who can embody any character and give them an authentic voice that is both nuanced and richly complex. I am excited to see her in the role of Lady Eve,” said showrunner Sam Akil in a statement.
Created by Salim Akil, Mara Brock Akil, and Greg Berlanti, the series follows Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, a metahuman who retired from the superhero business years ago but has to suit up again when Whale and his gang (The 100) threaten both his daughters.
Black Lightning will premiere in 2018 on The CW.
